Holidays mentioned below may affect your regular collection schedule. Service days that fall on or after a recognized holiday (listed below) will be delayed one day that week. Service days that fall before a recognized holiday are not affected and will remain on schedule. If a holiday is not mentioned in the schedule, your trash and recycling collections will not be affected.
Following is a list of materials included in the curbside recycling collection. To view the full recycling documentation, download the appropriate printable document located in the right column.
Non-recyclable materials:Following is a list of materials that should not be included with the recycling collection.
- Plastic bags
- Hangers (metal or plastic)
- Construction waste
- Microwave trays
- Light bulbs
- Glass cookware/bakeware
- Shredded paper
- Landscaping/yard waste
- Paper that has been in contact with food
- Fast food materials (straws, wrappers)
- Styrofoam (packing peanuts)
- Vehicle parts
- Window or auto glass
Container:Recyclables can be placed in the bin(s) of your choice (e.g. cardboard boxes, baskets, paper bags, etc). Do not place recyclables in plastic bags as they contaminate the recycling load. If you use a reusable container, cardboard box, or basket to store your recyclables, we will not take your container but will leave it for your next recycle day. Preparation:Recyclables need to be relatively clean, dry, and empty. Lightly rinse the recycling container, if necessary, to remove food particles. Please be conscientious of your water use while rinsing the containers. Remove non-recyclable material from the recyclable item (such as plastic cereal inserts). Plastic and metal caps and labels do not need to be removed from the recyclable items.
Separation:You do not need to sort or separate your recyclables from one another. This is a single-stream recycling program, meaning that all recyclable items are placed into the bin together (e.g. glass can be mixed with plastic, paper mixed with aluminum cans, etc.).
Placement:Recyclable items should be placed at the end of your driveway on the side opposite of the underground can. Containers put out by your underground may appear to be trash, and may not get picked up on your recycling day. All items must be taken to the curb (or service alley for condo customers) by 5:30 a.m. the day of collection. Recycling collection is unaffected by the rain! If you prefer to deliver your recyclables to your favorite charity, please continue to do so.
Recycling collection days:Beginning on February 1, 2010, recycing collection days will be changed to the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. Note that there is no recycling collection on the 5th Wednesdays. These recycling day changes are being implemented along with the modifications to the holiday operating schedules. After these changes, recycling collections will no longer be skipped on weeks affected by an observed holiday. Another advantage of these changes is that it allows customers to more easily identify their recycling days, which is now determined solely by the service area. Collection Time:To be sure of service, please have your Parks & Sons barrel(s) out at the curb by 5:30 a.m. on your pick up days as trucks will start collecting at that time.
Barrel Placement:The front of the barrel(s) should face your home or property with the handles facing toward the alley.
Multiple BarrelsIf you have two or more barrels, please place them at the street spaced at least four feet apart to leave room for the automated arms to grasp the barrels.
Containment:Bag and tie all trash before placing in the barrel. All trash must be contained in your barrel(s) provided to you by Parks & Sons and cannot protrude more than one foot beyond the barrel. Trash not contained in your barrel(s) will not be collected. As a precaution, do not set anything you want to keep near your barrel(s); we do not want our employees to accidentally dispose of something not intended for trash. If you use syringes, please dispose of your needles in a sealed container (e.g. coffee can or milk jug). Several employees have been injured due to needles protruding from plastic bags.
TrimmingsIn addition to your barrel(s), Parks & Sons will collect excess yard trimmings. All trimmings must be tied in bundles and stacked next to the barrel. The trimmings must come from your property, be less than 4 feet in length, and cannot weigh more than 50 pounds! Trimmings only will be collected from the area directly surrounding your barrel as we cannot come onto your property.
Unacceptable Waste:Remodeling/construction debris, dirt, rocks, cement, or roofing shingles cannot be taken with the regular collection. If you need to dispose of these types of items, please contact Customer Service to make special arrangements (additional charges will apply.
Hazardous Waste:Materials such as motor oils, tires, car batteries, chemicals, and paint cannot be placed in the regular trash as they are considered hazardous. For proper disposal methods, contact Customer Service or click on the Hazardous Waste link.
Large/Bulk Item Disposal:If you have an excessive amount of trash or large items to be disposed of, review the Bulk Collection page or contact Customer Service to arrange for a special pickup and pricing. Fees are dependent on the volume, size of item(s), etc.
Returned checks:For every returned check, a fee will be assessed to the account each time it is returned. Service may be suspended and/or terminated without notice if an account has a history of returned checks, or the returned check was remitted to pay a past due balance on the account.
Check remittance:When submitting a check as payment, you authorize Parks & Sons to use information from your check to make a one-time electronic fund transfer (EFT) from your account. When this information is used from your check to make an EFT, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the same day payment is received and your financial institution will not return the original check.
Credit/Debit cards:To pay your bill using a credit or debit card, you may submit payment online using the My Account portal or call Customer Service. Parks & Sons currently accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.
Automatic Payment:Enroll in our Auto Pay service to have your account balance automatically deducted from your credit or debit card account.
Late Payment:A late fee of will be charged on any outstanding balances that are past due. Late fees are subject to change at any time and without prior notice. Charges will be assessed on any unpaid balance remaining after the due date as indicated on the billing statement.
Correspondence:Do not mail correspondence or service requests with your payment. Correspondence may be sent utilizing the following methods: MAIL: Parks & Sons of Sun City, Inc., 11217 W. Nevada Ave., Youngtown, AZ 85363. FAX: (623) 977-7518. EMAIL: email@example.com. Please be sure to include your name, service address, contact information, and the best time to be reached.
Payment stub:To ensure proper credit, please return your stub with remittance. If you choose to pay your bill utilizing your bank’s online payment system, please be sure to reference your account number (located on the front of this remittance stub). It is not necessary to mail the payment stub if paying via your bank’s online payment system.
Service suspension/termination:All billing will reflect current charges and any delinquent amount. If the past due amount is not paid by the date indicated on the invoice, no further notice will be provided and service may be suspended and/or terminated for non-payment. Once stopped for non-payment, there will be a fee to resume service and payment will be required in the form of cash, money order, or credit/debit card to avoid a waiting period. Accounts that have a recurring history of service termination for non-payment may require an additional deposit prior to service re-activation.
Service changes:Modifications to your service must be requested in person, over the phone, or in writing. If you must stop your service for any reason, please be sure to contact Customer Service in advance as you will continue to be billed until such notification is received and processed.
What is single stream (commingled) recycling?
Single stream recycling, also known as commingled recycling, refers to a system in which all paper fibers and containers are mixed together in a receptacle and collection truck. This drastically differs from other recycling programs where the resident is required to manually separate each commodity (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass, etc.) and place them into different containers. In single stream, both the collection and processing systems must be designed to handle this fully combined mixture of recyclables.
What are the advantages to single stream recycling?
Single stream programs reduce the effort required of residents to participate, which normally results in more recyclables placed at the curb. This type of program also reduces the significant collection costs as single-compartment trucks are cheaper to purchase and operate, collection can be more automated, and routes can be serviced more efficiently. Greater fleet flexibility allows single-compartment vehicles to be used for refuse or recycling; thus, reducing the number of reserve vehicles needed. Single stream may also allow for new materials and more paper grades to be collected, including junk mail, telephone books, and mixed residential paper.
What does Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mean?
Recycling has been the buzz word in solid waste services for several years. The terms "reduce" and "reuse" have not been as prevalent in recent decades, yet they are equally important in dealing with refuse management throughout the world. Many people mistakenly think that creating more garbage is permissible since they believe it will be recycled instead of choosing to reduce or reuse the solid waste generated at home and work. Reduction of solid waste involves purchasing and using less material and packaging. Buying concentrate or even purchasing in bulk reduces the potential amount of waste in your garbage or recycling. For example, buying juice in concentrate form (usually in a small container) and then adding water later reduces the need to use large plastic containers for the same liquid. Just as important is reusing as much material and packaging as possible. Ceramic instead of paper cups, taking and reusing plastic bags at the grocery store, or making bird feeders from soda bottles are all examples of reuse.
Do I have to wash my recyclables?
All recyclables must be relatively clean, empty, and dry. This does not mean to put them through a dishwasher. This is especially important during drought periods. Examples of relatively clean, empty, and dry would be a mayonnaise jar that has been wiped clean of residue with a spatula or emptying a soda bottle completely in the sink. Both of those are clean and dry enough. Normally a good rinse will suffice; a little residue at the top of a bottle, for example, is fine. Just try to remove all food bits.
Do I need to take the labels off jars and cans?
No need to waste water and energy struggling with stubborn, gummy labels. These will be burned off during the recycling process.
Why are plastic grocery bags not accepted?
Ready markets for plastic bags do exist; however, all plastic bags (a.k.a. film plastic) are not made of the same plastic and are virtually impossible to sort using the current processing technology. Plastic bags wrap themselves around the conveyor belt rollers and damage processing equipment. Due to these processing problems and the dirty/contaminated condition of plastic bags in a commingled program, they are not recyclable in the program. Everyone is encouraged to reuse plastic bags as much as possible, whether it be reusing them to bag and tie your garbage and grass, or reusing them at the grocery store. In addition, most grocery stores have installed plastic bag recycling programs. Utilize these programs and please DO NOT place plastic bags in your recycling container.
What really happens to the recyclables after they are collected?
Recyclables are taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are sorted, contaminants removed, and the materials are bailed for shipping. Once materials are sorted, they are sent to recyclers throughout the United States and the world, depending on the availability of markets.
Can aluminum foil be recycled with cans?
Technically it can, but not all foil can be accepted because of food contamination. If you wish to recycle your aluminum foil please make sure it is clean and clear of any food particles or residue.
If something is made from recycled paper or plastic, can it be recycled again?
While it is true that recycling paper and plastic over and over will degrade the quality, that does not mean it cannot be recycled. Many recycled products contain a percentage of both virgin and post-consumer recycled content, and it would be quite difficult for you to know whether it is "recycle worthy." Even if the product does contain recycled content, it CAN be recycled again.
When glass, paper, and cans are recycled, they become similar products that can be used and recycled over and over again. With plastics recycling, however, there is usually only a single reuse. Most bottles and jugs do not become food and beverage containers again. For example, pop bottles might become carpet or stuffing for sleeping bags. Milk jugs are often made into plastic lumber, recycling bins, and toys. This makes plastic a great starting place for reducing your reliance on single-use containers, such as plastic water bottles – carry a cool reusable drinking container such as metal water bottles instead.
In the case of paper, the quality of the recycled paper fibers is assessed at the mill. The higher-quality fibers are used to create more recycled paper while the shorter, lower-quality fibers are turned into things like toilet paper, paper towels, and cereal boxes.
Why can’t I recycle broken glasses with my glass bottles and jars?

- To ensure service, you must have your items out at the curb by 6:00am on the first day of the bulk collection.
- Stack all items neatly and place on the edge of your property or sidewalk.
- Do not place items on the street, alley, or near water meters, utility boxes, mail boxes, or existing landscaping.
- The equipment utilized in the collection may leave behind small material, debris, and leaves. Please sweep or rake after collection, if necessary.
- Appliances : Stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, microwaves, televisions. Appliances that use refrigerants (such as freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners) are considered hazardous and will not be accepted in collection.
- Furniture : Sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, desks, patio furniture, exercise equipment, mattresses
- Yard Waste : Tree limbs (must be no more than 4 feet in length and 8 inches in diameter), cacti (must be in sturdy boxes), yard clippings/grass/leaves (must be bagged)
- Wood : Fences (must be no more than 4 feet in length
Unacceptable Items :
- Hazardous Waste : Motor oil, paint, paint thinner, cleaners, gasoline, batteries, liquids, appliances containing refrigerants (such as freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners).
- Medical or Animal Waste
- Inert Materials: Rocks, bricks, pavers, dirt, block, concrete, tile, asphalt, roofing shingles
- Auto Parts: Tires, auto body parts
- Construction/Demolition Debris: Roofing material, glass doors/windows, mirrors. Contractor-generated material or demolition debris cannot be collected.
